eCult eCult

Welcome to eCult!

eCult is Dav Clark's personal website.  The title is ironic.  Initally, it served as a way of posting invites to things like "ritual brunch."

Now it is mostly just me writing things, and testing out technology for more serious projects, such as my partnership with Jon Sandruck and an online holistic neuroscience community (although this is seriously stalled now that I'm actually doing neuroscience again).

I am too lazy right now to have a sidebar or other "modern" navigational system.  The truth is, this site is mostly for testing things I don't know how to do yet.  Things like page layout bore me.  Anyway, here are the thing(s) you may want to check out.

Status

I move around enough that it's worth letting people know where I am / am heading on my website.

I live in El Cerrito and student in Berkeley now!  Drop me a line if you want to meet up.  You can get approximate directions here.

My House is on Fire

Published: Jun 6, 2008 12:51:43 AM

I don't know anybody who ever had their house really catch on fire.  You know, when Firemen show up with Axes and go to town, and then you're left with a big, gaping hole in the wall, surrounded by char and the smell of smoke.  Except, of course, now I know one person - me!

I woke up this morning and my brother, Derek, came in and asked me if I was awake.  Then he showed me.  It was pretty stressful, I've gotta say.  I took a shot of tequila before going to work!

Ultimately, this served to illustrate the fallacy of using maximum likelihood estimation when I should have been operating in a decision-theoretic regime.  I woke up in the middle of the night and smelled smoke.  I even looked around.  But then I figured it must simply be something outside (not the outside of our house, mind you).  But I was too tired, and failed to consider the risk of not finding a fire - even if it was terribly unlikely.
